Lab Safety & Training

Advanced Composites Lab: Safety Rules

All users (student, staff, faculty, and visitors) must have permission from Dr. Jitendra S Tate and Dr. Ray Cook to operate any equipment in the Advanced Composites Lab. They must read, understand and sign following “Lab Rules” document every semester. All general users have to undergo mechanical tooling safety and hazardous communication trainings.

All researchers and frequent users who are permitted by Dr. Jitendra Tate to operate, maintain, and train other people must read, understand and sign following “Lab Rules” document every semester. All researchers and frequent users have to undergo hazardous waste training.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Machine Instruction Manuals

Machine standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Machine Instruction Manuals are available in hard-copy form in the lab near machines and in electronic form on lab’s website and TRACS site. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available in hard-copy form in the lab and also available in electronic form on lab’s website and on TRACS. Please, request access to TRACS site from Dr. Jitendra S. Tate.

Please, refer ‘SOP and Machine Manual' and 'Safety Data Sheet' sections at lab’s website under Resources.

Nanoparticle Safety

Here at the Advanced Composites Lab, safety within handling nanotechnology is taken very seriously. This is because the effects of nanotechnology on the human body are still being explored. There is separate ‘Nanoparticle Containment Room-NCR’ where dry nanoparticles shall be handled. All users of NCR have to undergo pulmonary function test (PFT) at Department of Respiratory Care, respirator fit test, and online respirator training.

Therefore, before the handling of any nanoparticles within the lab, users are required to review the following documents:

  • Handling of Nanoparticles
  • Appendix F: Nanotechnology Safety Protocol of Chemical Hygiene Plan prepared by EHS & RM (Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management)

Please, visit EHS & RM (Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management) website for additional 'Lab manuals' and 'Forms'.

Undergraduate and Graduate Researcher Training

Students working as researcher in Adcanced Composites Lab shall complete training on various machines, software, and safety.
